A creamy bowl of tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich on the side.

The best recipes…are hardly recipes! And this is one of them. This easy homemade tomato soup recipe makes a satisfying, yet quick and easy, meal when paired with something like grilled cheese, garlic bread, or ham sandwiches.

You won’t believe how easy it is to make! I know a lot of tomato soup recipes out there will include chicken broth, other vegetables, or complicated roux bases. While I’m sure those recipes are delicious, my goal with THIS recipe is to provide a quick and easy, yet real food, meal idea. In just 10 minutes or less.

Simple and quick can still taste delicious and provide nourishment for your family! 🙂

How to Make Homemade Tomato Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of canned crushed tomatoes
  • Dash paprika powder
  • Dash onion powder/flakes
  • Dash salt
  • 1 tsp sugar (cane sugar or sucanat, though I suppose you could probably use honey too!)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup fresh milk

Instructions

Crushed tomatoes in a pan with spices.

In a saucepan, heat up tomatoes along with spices, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Once hot, you can cook down more if desired – or if you have time.

Remove from heat immediately. Whisk in the milk quickly. Important note: Do NOT cook the soup after adding the milk or it will split and curdle! Instead, serve immediately.

See? Told you it was easy. 😉

This recipe makes one bowlful. Just duplicate by how many servings you need.

Homemade Tomato Soup FAQs

What Kind of Tomatoes to Use in Tomato Soup?

To make things quick, I like to use store-bought cans of crushed tomatoes. You could also use home-canned tomatoes, which will likely be a lot runnier unless you cook them down first.

My Dad also sometimes makes tomato soup using a V8-type juice that includes tomatoes and other vegetables. That’s another great option!

How to Make Tomato Soup Less Acidic

Tomatoes are naturally quite acidic, especially if you’re using heirloom varieties, so I like to add a bit of sugar to the mix. It doesn’t need to be a lot. You could cut it from what I include in this recipe, but just a little sweetness helps cut the acidic bite and pull all of the flavors together.

What are Some Good Foods to Serve with Tomato Soup?

Tomato soup pairs well with a fat + carb, so grilled cheese is an absolute favorite. But that isn’t the only option! You can also serve it with garlic bread, a ham sandwich, crackers, pretzels, Texas toast, and more. A nice crunch goes well with the smooth tomato soup, turning it into a more satisfying meal.

How Can You Thicken Tomato Soup?

This soup recipe is a little runnier than others out there. That makes it gluten-free and a lot faster to make too. I suppose if you were worried about it being thin, you might be able to stir in a little flour or cornstarch at the beginning, before you heat up the mixture, but I don’t know what that might taste like.

What Kind of Milk to Use in Tomato Soup

You can use cow or goat milk in this soup! I’ve used both with great success.

Also, you can substitute some cream for the milk in the soup. That’s amazing! But heavy cream isn’t something you always have on hand, so I usually just use milk instead.

I suppose you could experiment with alternatives like coconut milk or almond milk. Coconut milk in particular might work, though I’ve never tried it – it would probably be very creamy. Other alternative milks might split under heat, so experiment.
