Here’s the history of the goat whey protein smoothie: I decided to try goat whey protein powder for the first time. I’d been dragging my feet because compared to cow whey, it’s quite expensive, but when I caught a sale at Amazon, I knew it was time to try it.

Woah, talk about a worthwhile experience!

I know that sounds dramatic, but goat whey protein powder was PERFECT for me. I was able to make a smoothie before bed and when I started drinking it, I stopped waking up at 2am like I had been doing for MONTHS, I assume because of blood sugar imbalances. I was dealing with the aftermath of a serious illness at the time, so it seemed like an easy-to-absorb protein source that my digestive system could handle.

When it arrived, I quickly looked up some random recipes online and found one that used an apple, something I also had available at the time. But I tweaked the recipe and came up with my own version!

Now, full disclosure, when it comes to protein powder, goat whey powder is one of the most expensive ones I’ve seen. This is something I don’t use every day anymore in part because it is so expensive. I pretty much only buy it if I can catch it on sale, and even then it’s pricey. But for some health situations, I would say it is still worth the risk. It is a protein that your body can more easily absorb in some situations.

Homemade Goat Whey Protein Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 sliced apple (peel on) OR 1 cup of home canned apples
  • ½ cup water (only if using raw or canned apples without juice)
  • 1 serving goat whey protein isolate powder (may adjust according to desire/tolerance)
  • 1 teaspoon nuts (I often use walnuts)
  • Dash vanilla (optional, but it is yummy)

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge. It keeps for several days, so I often make it ahead of time. Shake before serving if it separates.

You might be wondering why I’ve included each ingredient. Here’s an explanation:

A large bowl of sliced apples with more apples and apple scraps in the background.

Why Apple in the Smoothie?

Apple is high in fiber and also naturally a bit sweet (without being so sweet it spikes your blood sugar), so it works well for this recipe. I use fresh apples when they’re in season and home canned apples during the winter. The home canned apples give a much thicker end result, I assume because of the broken down pectin, but raw apples work well too.

As for the water, you really only need to add it if you’re using a raw apple or for some reason, your canned apples don’t have any juice. It’s really only there to make smooth blending. If you put too much liquid into your smoothie, it will split into apple puree and water, which isn’t so tasty.

Could I Use Other Fruits in This Smoothie?

Certainly! I’ve used honeydew and cantaloupe, and both worked well, though smoothies made with melon do separate more in the fridge and contain more natural sugars. I tried avocado once. That was…okay. It wasn’t my favorite combo. I have also tried adding a bit of olive oil for the fat. That was passable, but still not my favorite. I like the walnut’s slight bitterness and prefer that over olive oil.

Why Nuts in the Goat Whey Protein Smoothie?

The original recipe I saw used either dairy milk or nut milk. I didn’t want to use goat milk, and I didn’t have any nut milk available. So I just threw some walnuts into the mix and that seemed to work just fine. You want a bit of fat to go along with your protein and fiber, to balance blood sugar, and a few nuts seems to do the trick in this smoothie.

I’ve used walnuts and pistachios, and I think walnuts fit better. Their flavor fits the smoothie better, and they don’t turn your smoothie an off green color, haha.

Why Vanilla in the Smoothie?

Vanilla is optional. I use it sometimes for extra flavor, and I definitely would add some if you’re not used to the taste of whey protein powder. I don’t mind the flavor of my smoothie, however, so I just skip vanilla these days.

What Brand of Goat Whey to Buy

There are several out there, but the one I’ve been using is the Bulk Supplements brand from Amazon. I’ve been very pleased with the quality previously, though I’m sure there are others that are just as good. (One of them says “mineral whey”, so I’m not sure if that’s the same. You’re looking for whey protein isolate.)

Goat Whey Protein Smoothie Recipe FAQs

How Long Will the Goat Whey Protein Smoothie Keep in the Fridge?

I wouldn’t store this longer than a week max. I’ve done up to 5 days, I think, with success. Just make sure it doesn’t smell or look bad before consuming. You want to keep this smoothie in a sealed container, like a glass canning jar with a lid.

What Does a Goat Whey Smoothie Taste Like?

The goat whey protein powder really doesn’t taste like much to me. It’s almost a little cheesy and powdery? But not very strong.

The texture is very creamy, almost like a milkshake! I actually really like the texture of the smoothie. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever made with dairy, actually. I like creamy. 🙂

Could I Add Electrolytes?

Sure thing! I would test to see if you like the flavor. I have done it a few times and I do think it might need a little more flavoring like vanilla to cover them up, but it really depends what you’re using and whether or not it tastes “off” to you.
